Know if you need a visa before you book.
Layag compares your passport with every country on your trip and shows whether you can go visa-free (and for how long), need an e-visa or a visa on arrival, or need a full visa. It reminds you before an upcoming trip. It's guidance, not legal advice: confirm on the destination's official government website before you book.

How it works
- Set your passport country once, on the Visa screen or in your profile. Hold two passports? Switch whenever you like.
- Plan a trip to one country or several.
- See the status for each country in the trip's Visa tab: visa-free with the number of days allowed, e-visa, visa on arrival, or visa required.
- Get a reminder in your alerts as departure gets closer if you still need to arrange a visa, more urgently in the last two weeks.

Visa-free, e-visa, visa on arrival, visa required
| Status | What it means |
|---|---|
| Visa-free | You can enter as a tourist without applying, for a set number of days. Border officers can still ask for an onward ticket or proof of funds. |
| E-visa | You apply and pay online before you travel, then show the approval at the border. |
| Visa on arrival | You get the visa at the border, usually for a fee. Check accepted currencies and entry points. |
| Visa required | You apply through an embassy or consulate before you go. Start early: appointments can take weeks. |
Some countries also require an electronic travel authorization (like the US ESTA or the UK ETA) even when you don't need a visa. Check the destination's official site for these.
Local rules worth knowing
Next to the Visa tab, each trip has a Rules tab with local laws and customs that catch visitors out. For Thailand, for example, that includes the strict laws protecting the monarchy and severe drug penalties.

What Layag doesn't do
Layag doesn't issue visas, apply for them on your behalf, or guarantee entry: the border officer always has the final say. Visa statuses come from the open Passport Index dataset, last updated in September 2026, and rules can change faster than any dataset. Before you book anything non-refundable, confirm on the destination's official immigration website and your own government's travel advice page.
Questions
Which passports and countries does the visa check cover?
Around 199 passports and destinations, from the open Passport Index dataset. If you hold more than one passport, set the one you'll travel on.
Does Layag check transit countries?
Layag checks the countries you add to your trip. If you change planes somewhere else, check that country's transit rules for your passport separately.
Can I rely on Layag instead of the embassy website?
Use it to see quickly where you might need a visa, then confirm on the official government source before booking. Rules change, and only the destination's authorities are definitive.
